The gold coin has a diameter of 23 mm and weighs 8.96 g. With a fineness of 900/1000, the fine weight of the 20-kroner Christian IX gold coin is 8.06 g, making it a good alternative to modern bullion coins.

The obverse of the 20 Danish krone gold coin features a portrait of King Christian IX. The reverse bears the Danish coat of arms, as well as the year of minting and the coin’s face value. In addition to a small engraved heart—which stands for the manufacturer, the “Royal Danish Mint”—the initials of the mint master, Vilhelm Buchard Poulsen, are also featured on both the obverse and reverse of the coin.

King Christian IX was born on April 8, 1818, at Gottorf Castle in Schleswig and reigned as King of Denmark from 1863 to 1906. Christian IX was a member of the ducal House of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg and was designated heir to the Danish monarchy in 1852 due to the anticipated extinction of the main line of the House of Oldenburg. Following the death of King Frederick VII in 1853, he succeeded him. He earned the nickname “Father-in-Law of Europe” due to his numerous descendants and their marriages to members of various European royal houses.
