Gold or Silver

Gold or Silver: Which Is the Better Investment?

Want to invest in precious metals but aren't sure whether gold or silver suits you better? Here's what we can say upfront: both metals have their strengths, and in most cases the right choice isn't one or the other, but a mix of both. We lay out the differences honestly, so you can make the decision that's right for you.

Key facts at a glance

  • Gold is seen as a classic store of value and safe haven that stays stable in times of crisis.
  • Silver is cheaper to get started with, but fluctuates more, since a large share of demand comes from industry.
  • Tax makes a big difference when buying, since investment gold is VAT-free while silver isn't.
  • Spreading your risk by holding a balanced portfolio of both metals is usually the best approach.

Gold as a safe store of value

Gold is the precious metal most people think of first when it comes to preserving wealth. It's barely consumed industrially and has served as a store of value for millennia. In uncertain times, investors and central banks alike seek out gold as a safe haven, which supports the price over the long term.

A key reason for this stability is protection against inflation. While paper money loses purchasing power as prices rise, physical gold holds its value over long periods. Unlike a share, gold doesn't generate an ongoing return in the form of dividends — but in exchange, it carries no company default risk either. Well-known investment coins such as the Vienna Philharmonic, the Maple Leaf or the Krugerrand are recognised worldwide and can always be resold easily.

The biggest practical advantage lies in tax treatment. Common gold bars and gold coins count as investment gold and are exempt from VAT in Germany, so your entire investment goes into the metal rather than into levies. On top of that, gold has a very high value density — even a small amount represents a high value and can be stored easily and space-efficiently, including via professional storage for larger holdings.

Pros:

  • Stable store of value with low volatility
  • VAT-free when buying investment gold
  • Recognised worldwide and always easy to trade
  • Space-efficient to store

Cons:

  • High entry price per ounce
  • Lower short-term price potential than silver
  • No ongoing income such as interest or dividends

Silver as a dynamic industrial metal

Silver is considerably cheaper than gold, making it the easier entry point for anyone wanting to start with small amounts. The decisive difference, however, lies in demand. Silver isn't bought only as an investment — it's consumed above all by industry, for example in electronics and solar panels.

As a physical store of value, silver also has a long history: it served as currency for centuries, long before it became an industrial metal. For investors today, its fine denominations are especially practical. You can get started with just a few ounces and build up your holdings gradually, without having to invest a large sum right away.

According to data from the German Mineral Resources Agency (DERA), industrial demand accounts for around 58 to 60% of total silver demand, with a large share going to photovoltaics and electronics. This cuts both ways. When the economy picks up, silver often benefits more than gold. When the economy weakens, though, the price can also fall further. Silver, in other words, offers more opportunity, but also more volatility.

When buying, you should factor in the tax. Silver bars and conventionally taxed coins carry 19% VAT on the full price. For margin-scheme silver coins, tax is charged only on the dealer's margin, which results in a lower effective burden.

Pros:

  • Low entry price, even in small denominations
  • High price potential when industrial demand rises
  • Dual demand from both investment and industry
  • A good complement for portfolio diversification

Cons:

  • Noticeably sharper price swings than gold
  • 19% VAT, only partly reduced via the margin scheme
  • More storage volume needed for the same monetary value

How do gold and silver differ in price?

A useful benchmark here is the gold-silver ratio. It shows how many ounces of silver are equivalent in value to one ounce of gold. Depending on how it's calculated, the ratio currently sits at around 57 to 69, with the long-term average often cited as roughly 60 to 1. You can track how prices move at any time via our overview of the current gold price.

A high ratio means silver is relatively cheap compared with gold. For the coming months, market observers continue to expect high volatility in the silver price. So if you're positioning for short-term moves, silver offers more room to manoeuvre — but you also have to be able to stomach sharper pullbacks.

What suits whom?

There's no one-size-fits-all winner, since both metals serve different purposes. What matters is what you want to achieve with your investment.

  • Safety-focused investors lean towards gold, since it holds its value stably over long periods.
  • Opportunity-focused investors with a longer time horizon add more silver, to benefit from its industrial potential.
  • Beginners with a smaller budget often start with silver, since the entry cost is lower, and add gold later.

This is really the heart of the matter. Rather than committing rigidly to one metal, a diversified strategy is usually the smarter approach in most cases. At Geiger Edelmetalle, we recommend holding some of both metals, since gold stabilises your portfolio while silver adds extra potential. Optionally, you can diversify even further with platinum, palladium or copper, for instance via ready-made investment packages.

Summary

Gold pays off as a safe store of value, silver as an opportunity-rich but more volatile addition. Combining both balances out risk and lets you benefit from the strengths of each metal. Get in touch with us if you'd like help finding the right balance for your portfolio.

Frequently asked questions

Is gold or silver the better investment?
It depends on your goal. Gold preserves value, silver offers more opportunity at higher risk. A combination of both is considered the most balanced solution.

Why is silver more expensive to buy than its pure metal value would suggest?
In Germany, VAT applies to silver but not to investment gold. For coins taxed under the margin scheme, tax is charged only on the dealer's margin, which reduces the markup.

How much silver should you hold relative to gold?
There's no fixed rule. Safety-focused investors weight gold more heavily; those seeking more opportunity increase their silver share. What matters is that both metals are represented.

Does silver really fluctuate more than gold?
Yes. Because a large share of silver demand comes from industry, its price reacts more strongly to economic conditions and therefore fluctuates considerably more than gold.
