Storage and Security

Storing Gold Safely: At Home, at a Bank or in a Customs-Free Warehouse?

Whether in your own safe, a bank safe deposit box, or a customs-free warehouse — the right storage for gold depends heavily on your holdings, security needs and desired access. While a home safe is available at any time, a safe deposit box, precious metals custody account and customs-free warehouse score points with higher security and, in some cases, tax advantages. We compare all the options and show which storage form suits which holding.

Key facts at a glance

  • There is no single best storage option for everyone — the right storage concept for investors depends on the value of their holdings, their security needs, and how often access is required.
  • Storing gold at home is legally unrestricted, but home contents insurance often significantly limits the reimbursement amount for gold and jewellery — depending on the policy, often already in the range of EUR 20,000 to 30,000.
  • A safe deposit box at a bank or precious metals dealer offers considerably more security at manageable annual costs, roughly between EUR 30 and EUR 500 per year on the market depending on size and provider — access is tied to opening hours.
  • A precious metals custody account with a specialised provider stores gold, insured, in a high-security vault while legally remaining your property (a segregated special asset), and can be sold or partially delivered at any time.
  • The customs-free warehouse scores points mainly for silver, platinum and palladium with a VAT advantage — for gold, which is tax-free anyway, the security and diversification aspect matters more here.
  • For larger holdings, a combination of several storage locations is often advisable rather than a single solution.

The short answer first

For smaller amounts worth a few thousand euros, a good, certified home safe is usually sufficient. From a certain value onward — many people use their home contents insurance's coverage limit as a guide — storage outside the home becomes worthwhile: either in a safe deposit box or, specifically for gold, in an insured precious metals custody account. Anyone holding larger quantities of silver, platinum or palladium can additionally benefit from the tax treatment in a customs-free warehouse.

Looking for secure storage for your precious metal? Geiger Edelmetalle offers safe deposit boxes in Leipzig and Stuttgart, an insured precious metals custody account for gold, and a customs-free warehouse for silver, platinum and palladium.

Is it even allowed to store gold at home without restriction?

Yes. In Germany, there is no upper limit restricting the amount of legally acquired gold you may keep in private possession at home. Because of gold's high value density, though, it's still worth thinking about storage before you even buy. Unlike anonymous purchases — where an identification requirement kicks in above certain amounts — there is no comparable legal reporting requirement for storage itself. The real challenge lies not in the legal area, but in the practical one: security and insurance coverage. Just how real the burglary risk is can be seen in the German Federal Police Crime Statistics: the number of home burglaries in Germany rose by 18.1 percent to 77,819 cases in 2023.

Storing gold at home: advantages and disadvantages

Advantages:

  • Available at any time, without prior notice
  • No ongoing fees
  • Full control and discretion

Disadvantages:

  • Risk of burglary, fire and water damage
  • Home contents insurance usually only reimburses cash, jewellery and precious metals up to a limited maximum amount — often in the range of a few tens of thousands of euros, depending on the insurer and policy
  • Higher coverage amounts generally require a certified safe — a simple hardware-store safe usually isn't sufficient for this

On safe certification: the decisive factor is the resistance grade under EN 1143-1, tested and certified among others by VdS Schadenverhütung GmbH. The higher the grade, the higher the coverage amount typically accepted by insurers — as a rough guide, which can vary in detail by insurer and policy:

VdS resistance grade Typical insurable amount
Grade 0 up to approx. EUR 40,000
Grade I up to approx. EUR 65,000
Grade II up to approx. EUR 100,000
Grade III up to approx. EUR 200,000
Grade IV up to approx. EUR 400,000
Grade V up to approx. EUR 500,000
Grade VI up to approx. EUR 750,000

In addition, most insurers require that safes weighing less than 1,000 kg be firmly anchored to a wall or floor to be considered adequately secured. Just how important this is is shown by another look at the crime statistics: only around 16.1 percent of home burglaries were solved in 2022 — a certified, anchored safe is therefore often the only reliable safeguard.

Anyone storing gold at home should check in advance with their own home contents insurer up to what amount precious metals are covered and exactly which safe class is required. These conditions vary considerably from insurer to insurer.

Common mistakes: why a hiding place is no substitute for a safe

A popular but risky approach is improvised hiding of gold — for example in an empty cigarette pack, the freezer, or a sock drawer. Such hiding places are, from experience, well known to burglars and offer no real protection. On top of that: according to police burglary-prevention guidance, burglars typically spend only a few minutes in a home — professional offenders search in the same familiar spots every time. A certified, anchored safe is therefore always preferable to a hiding place.

Storing gold in a safe deposit box: bank or precious metals dealer

A safe deposit box addresses the biggest risk of home storage: access by third parties. A bank safe deposit box is the classic go-to solution for many, though an increasing number of banks no longer offer this service at all, or only to a limited extent. An alternative is safe deposit boxes at specialised precious metals dealers, which operate to comparable security standards. On the market, annual costs for a bank safe deposit box range roughly between EUR 30 and EUR 500, depending on size, bank and region.

Example: Geiger Edelmetalle. At the Schloss Güldengossa near Leipzig and Brainkofen near Stuttgart locations, safe deposit boxes are offered to bank standard with a dual-lock system, alarm-secured and with modern burglary protection. Access is possible on weekdays from 9 am to 5 pm by appointment; the boxes are fully insurable — though insurance is not automatically included and must be taken out separately. The rental period is one year each, with flexible extension or cancellation.

Safe deposit box sizes and annual prices, Schloss Güldengossa (Leipzig):

Size Dimensions (H×W×D in cm) Annual price
1 5 × 27 × 38 EUR 87.50
2 7.5 × 27/24 × 38/43 EUR 107.50
3 10 × 27 × 38 EUR 130.00
4 12.5 × 24 × 43 EUR 155.00
5 15 × 27 × 38 EUR 180.00
6 17.5 × 24 × 43 EUR 210.00
7 20 × 27 × 38 EUR 235.00
8 30 × 27/24 × 38/43 EUR 335.00
9 60 × 27 × 38 EUR 640.00

Safe deposit box sizes and annual prices, Brainkofen (Stuttgart):

Size Dimensions / type Annual price
1 10 × 27 × 38 cm EUR 130.00
2 15 × 27 × 38 cm EUR 180.00
3 20 × 27 × 38 cm EUR 235.00
4 Safe D1 EUR 640.00

Annual prices will rise from 2028 onward in even-numbered years by a fixed amount per size (between EUR 7.50 and EUR 20 at Schloss Güldengossa, and between EUR 10 and EUR 40 at Brainkofen).

Advantages:

  • Significantly higher security level than at home
  • Usually predictable, manageable annual costs
  • Discreet storage away from your own home — particularly suited to investors with a heightened need for discretion

Disadvantages:

  • Access only during the provider's opening hours
  • Insurance usually not automatically included, but must be taken out separately
  • Ongoing costs even if the contents aren't moved

Storing gold in a precious metals custody account

Alongside the classic safe deposit box, there's another solution specifically tailored to gold: the precious metals custody account with a specialised provider. Unlike a safe deposit box, you don't rent a physical compartment here — instead, specific gold bars are stored on your behalf in a central high-security vault facility.

Example: Geiger Edelmetalle. The precious metals custody account stores gold bars of various weights (e.g. 100 g, 250 g, 500 g, 1 kg) in Geiger Edelmetalle AG's central high-security vault facility in Rötha near Leipzig — a one-kilogram bar takes up very little space due to its high value density. The vault's total holdings are fully insured against burglary, robbery and fire. Legally important: because of the segregation from the provider's operating assets, the stored gold remains your property at all times — even in the event of the provider's insolvency, it is protected as a segregated special asset, which is particularly relevant for investors with larger holdings. You can sell your holdings at any time or have them physically delivered, and partial delivery is also possible.

Terms in detail: a custody account can be opened from a minimum storage value of EUR 10,000. The annual storage fee depends on the stored value:

Precious metal value Gold storage fee p.a.
EUR 10,000 – 99,999 0.70%
EUR 100,000 – 249,999 Price on request
EUR 250,000 – 999,999 Price on request
From EUR 1,000,000 Price on request

A minimum storage fee of EUR 150 per year applies (all figures include statutory VAT). Billing takes place annually as of the last London Fixing of the calendar year, or pro rata at the end of the contract. The contract runs for an indefinite period and can be cancelled by you as the customer at any time; if the holding falls below EUR 10,000, Geiger can also terminate without notice, and above this threshold with three months' notice to the end of the year.

Advantages:

  • Specifically tailored to gold, domestic storage with fast availability
  • Legally clearly designated as your property (segregated special asset protection), fully insured against burglary, robbery and fire
  • Flexible: cancellable, sellable or even partially deliverable at any time

Disadvantages:

  • Only usable from a minimum storage value of EUR 10,000
  • Minimum fee of EUR 150 per year even with a small holding close to the entry threshold
  • No physical safe deposit box of your own to open yourself — management is handled via the provider

Custody account or safe deposit box — what's the difference? With a safe deposit box, you rent your own individual compartment with contents of your own choosing and can open it in person on-site. With a precious metals custody account, the provider stores specific gold bars assigned to you centrally — in return, selling and partial delivery are usually more straightforward, without you needing to appear in person.

Storing gold in a customs-free warehouse: who does it actually benefit?

A customs-free warehouse is an officially approved and monitored storage facility in which goods can be stored untaxed and uncustomed. For precious metals, that means: as long as the goods remain in the customs-free warehouse, no import VAT is charged — not even when sold directly out of the warehouse.

Important context for gold: investment gold is already exempt from VAT in the EU under Section 25c of the German VAT Act (UStG) (more on this in our article Why Is Gold Tax-Free and Silver Isn't?). The main tax advantage of a customs-free warehouse — avoiding VAT — therefore has its full effect mainly for silver, platinum and palladium, which are regularly subject to 19 percent VAT. This is exactly what Geiger Edelmetalle's customs-free warehouse offer is geared towards: it targets the three "white metals" silver, platinum and palladium, which can be purchased and stored there without VAT. According to Geiger, this leads to a "significantly lower spread between buying and selling".

For gold, the customs-free warehouse is therefore not primarily a tax-saving option, but can be of interest for other reasons:

  • Segregated asset protection: stored precious metals are treated as segregated special assets, similar to a bank custody account for securities, and are therefore particularly protected in the event of the storage operator's insolvency.
  • Highest security standard: customs-free warehouses are generally particularly secured and monitored.
  • Geographic diversification: anyone deliberately wanting to spread their assets across different locations and legal jurisdictions can use a customs-free warehouse abroad as an additional component.

Terms in detail: a minimum storage value of EUR 10,000 also applies to the customs-free warehouse; custody at Geiger Edelmetalle is provided through the custodian Loomis Schweiz AG. The annual storage fee is tiered by value and metal:

Precious metal value Silver p.a. Platinum + Palladium p.a.
EUR 10,000 – 99,999 1.40% 0.70%
EUR 100,000 – 249,999 1.20% 0.60%
EUR 250,000 – 999,999 1.10% 0.55%
From EUR 1,000,000 1.00% 0.50%

A minimum storage fee of EUR 150 per year (including VAT) also applies here, billed as of the last London Fixing of the year.

Also note: at Geiger Edelmetalle, physical access to the customs-free warehouse is not possible for private individuals — delivery of the stored goods is possible at any time, but this incurs, in addition to the VAT applicable on the value of the goods at the time of delivery, a withdrawal and customs fee of EUR 200. Alternatively, the stored goods can be sold directly out of the warehouse to Geiger at the current daily buy-back price, without any VAT being charged in that case. A German billing address is also required for purchases. As with the precious metals custody account, the customs-free warehouse contract also runs for an indefinite period — long-term storage without a fixed time limit is therefore possible.

Handling and caring for gold properly: practical tips

Regardless of the storage location chosen, it's worth handling the material itself correctly:

  • Careful handling: gold, especially at high fineness (e.g. .9999), is a comparatively soft metal and scratches easily. Bars and coins should therefore be touched as little as possible directly and instead held by the edges.
  • Use the original packaging: keep bars and coins in their original packaging or coin capsules where possible — this protects the surface and preserves resale value.
  • Store certificates separately: authenticity certificates and purchase receipts should be kept separately from the gold itself, not alongside it — that way they aren't affected in the event of damage.
  • Consider space requirements: high-value-density bars (e.g. one-kilogram bars) take up very little storage space, while larger quantities of coins or smaller denominations require more room — this is particularly relevant when choosing the right safe deposit box size.

Cost comparison at a glance

Storage location Annual costs (approx.) Access Special feature
At home (certified safe) No ongoing costs, one-off safe purchase At any time Insurance amount usually limited
Safe deposit box (bank/dealer) Approx. EUR 87.50 to EUR 640 depending on size (Geiger example) During opening hours, by appointment Higher security level, insurance often separate
Precious metals custody account From EUR 10,000 storage value: 0.70% p.a. (gold), min. EUR 150/year No personal on-site access, but sellable/deliverable at any time Specifically for gold, insured, segregated asset protection
Customs-free warehouse From EUR 10,000 storage value: 0.70–1.40% p.a. depending on metal, min. EUR 150/year No direct physical access for private individuals VAT advantage mainly for silver, platinum, palladium

What about insurance?

Regardless of the storage location, it's worth checking your insurance coverage in advance. Also, don't keep purchase receipts and other documentation in the same place as the gold itself:

  • At home: check your home contents insurance's maximum limit for cash, jewellery and precious metals, as well as the required safe certification.
  • Safe deposit box: the contents are generally not automatically insured — a separate valuables insurance policy covers loss or theft. Check carefully before signing a contract what coverage amount the provider actually allows.
  • Precious metals custody account: the holding is usually already covered by an insurer at the provider, and the legal segregation from operating assets (segregated special asset) additionally protects it in the event of insolvency.
  • Customs-free warehouse: storage usually takes place as part of a regulated, insured warehouse operation, meaning a high standard of protection exists.

Which storage suits whom?

For investors, the best choice depends mainly on holdings, desired access, and protection needs.

  • Smaller holdings, occasional additional purchases: a certified safe at home is usually sufficient and cost-effective — a certified safe is always preferable to an improvised hiding place.
  • Medium to larger holdings, priority on maximum security and personal access: a safe deposit box at a bank or precious metals dealer offers a significantly higher level of protection, even if gold and silver are to be stored together.
  • Pure gold investment without wanting to handle your own safe deposit box: an insured precious metals custody account offers security and flexibility without you needing to appear in person.
  • Larger quantities of silver, platinum or palladium: here, a customs-free warehouse can be particularly worthwhile financially thanks to the VAT advantage.
  • Broadly diversified assets: a combination of several storage locations reduces the risk of concentrating everything in one place.

Summary

The right storage for gold isn't an either-or decision, but a question of value, security needs and access frequency. Home storage offers maximum availability, a safe deposit box more security at predictable cost, a precious metals custody account security and flexibility without your own compartment, and the customs-free warehouse plays to its strengths mainly with silver, platinum and palladium.

At Geiger Edelmetalle, we offer you three professional solutions: safe deposit boxes in Leipzig and Stuttgart, an insured precious metals custody account for gold, and a customs-free warehouse for silver, platinum and palladium — you can also find an overview of all storage options here. We're happy to advise you on which combination suits your holdings.

Frequently asked questions

Am I allowed to store gold at home without restriction?
Yes, there is no legal upper limit for privately storing legally acquired gold. What matters more is what amount your home contents insurance actually covers in the event of a claim.

What does a safe deposit box for gold cost?
Costs depend on size and provider. At Geiger Edelmetalle, annual prices range depending on box size from EUR 87.50 (smallest box in Leipzig) to EUR 640 (largest box in Leipzig or Stuttgart).

From what amount is a precious metals custody account or customs-free warehouse worthwhile?
Both offers from Geiger Edelmetalle require a minimum storage value of EUR 10,000. The storage fee ranges between 0.50% and 1.40% per year depending on metal and value tier, with a minimum of EUR 150 per year.

Is a customs-free warehouse worthwhile for gold too?
The tax advantage of a customs-free warehouse mainly concerns silver, platinum and palladium, since investment gold is exempt from VAT anyway. For gold, a customs-free warehouse can still be of interest for security and diversification reasons.

What's the difference between a precious metals custody account and the customs-free warehouse?
The precious metals custody account is designed for gold, held domestically in a high-security vault facility, and can be sold or delivered at any time. The customs-free warehouse is located abroad, allows no personal access, and offers its tax advantage mainly for silver, platinum and palladium.

Is my gold stored at home covered by home contents insurance?
Usually only up to a certain maximum amount, and often only if a certified safe is used. Check the exact conditions individually with your insurer.
