Selling Krugerrand Coins: How to Get the Best Price

The Krugerrand is the world's most-traded gold investment coin — which also makes it especially easy to sell, with no elaborate individual assessment like jewellery or old gold requires. What matters for the price is the precisely known fine gold content and the current daily gold price. We show how the buy-back price is calculated, where to get the best price, and what to know about ID requirements and tax.

The short answer first

You'll generally get the best price for your Krugerrand from a specialised precious metals dealer, who buys it back as a standardised investment product at the current daily buy-back price — not from a pawnshop or jeweller, where investment coins are usually only a side business. Since a Krugerrand coin's fine gold content is precisely known, the buy-back price can be checked online before you even sell.

Looking to sell your Krugerrand? You can see the current buy-back price for every Krugerrand denomination directly in Geiger Edelmetalle's online shop — without having to request a quote first.

What makes the Krugerrand special as an investment coin?

The Krugerrand has been minted by the South African Mint since 1967 and is regarded as the first modern gold investment coin — named after former South African president Paul Kruger, whose portrait adorns the obverse. To this day, it remains the world's most-traded gold coin, which has a direct impact when it comes to selling: hardly any other investment product is recognised and bought back just as reliably by so many dealers.

Technically, the Krugerrand isn't made of pure gold, but of an alloy with a fineness of 916.7 parts per thousand (22 karat) — the remainder is copper, which gives the coin its characteristic, slightly reddish colour and high scratch resistance. This hardness is a deliberate design advantage over purer gold coins: the Krugerrand scratches and deforms less easily, which better preserves its resale value over the years.

Despite the alloy, the standard size contains exactly 1 troy ounce (31.1035 grams) of pure gold; the coin's total weight, due to the copper content, is just over 33 grams. Besides this 1 oz version, the Krugerrand also comes in smaller denominations, whose fine gold content — and therefore resale value — decreases proportionally:

Denomination Fine gold content Approximate total weight
1 oz 31.1035 g approx. 33.93 g
1/2 oz 15.5518 g approx. 16.97 g
1/4 oz 7.7759 g approx. 8.48 g
1/10 oz 3.1104 g approx. 3.39 g

The same principle applies to selling at every denomination: the buy-back price is proportional to the respective fine gold content, based on the current daily gold price.

How is the buy-back price for your Krugerrand calculated?

Since a Krugerrand coin's fine gold content is precisely standardised, its value — unlike jewellery or old gold — can be derived directly from the current daily gold price. The buyer doesn't pay you the full gold price, however, but deducts a trading margin to cover their costs and profit.

A worked example for context, as of 28 September 2026:

Denomination Purchase price Buy-back price
1 oz EUR 3,755.40 EUR 3,503.50
1/10 oz EUR 411.70 EUR 355.80
1/2, 1/4 oz see online shop see online shop

The gap between the purchase and buy-back price in this 28 September 2026 example is around 7 to 14 percent, depending on denomination. Important: these figures are a snapshot and change several times a day along with the gold price. The actual value of your coin at the time of sale can most reliably be checked directly in the online shop, since the purchase and buy-back prices shown there are continuously updated — for the smaller denominations just as much as for the standard size.

Why selling is simpler than with jewellery or old gold

Unlike old gold — such as jewellery, dental gold or cutlery — no individual assessment of fineness or weight is needed for a Krugerrand. Since it's a standardised product with a known composition, a dealer can quote the buy-back price immediately, without having to professionally examine the coin first. This clearly distinguishes the sales process from that for non-standardised old gold items, where weight and fineness must first be determined before a price can be set.

In practice, this means: the specialised old gold buy-back service with individual assessment is not the right route for selling your Krugerrand — instead, it's the regular buy-back process for investment gold, as described in our article Selling Gold: Where Do You Get the Best Price?, which also covers the detailed process for selling in person or by insured post.

How the sale works in practice

Because the Krugerrand is a standardised product, the sales process is refreshingly straightforward:

  1. Check the current buy-back price: you can already see the current daily buy-back price for your denomination online in advance.
  2. Choose your sales route: either in person at a branch with immediate payout, or by insured shipping to the dealer.
  3. Identification: above the thresholds mentioned above, you'll need to identify yourself — for a 1 oz Krugerrand, this is practically always the case.
  4. Payout: in cash at the branch, or by bank transfer to your account.

A separate professional assessment, as is customary for old gold buy-backs, isn't required here — the dealer recognises the coin by its design, dimensions and weight.

Krugerrand or other investment coins — does it make a difference when selling?

The same principle that applies to the Krugerrand generally applies to all recognised investment coins with a standardised fine gold content, such as the Vienna Philharmonic, the Canadian Maple Leaf, or the American Eagle. The Krugerrand has established itself as an internationally particularly well-known and liquid coin, which means it's readily bought back by practically every specialised dealer — with less common coins, on the other hand, not every provider may carry or buy them back. If you're unsure which investment coin best suits your holdings, you'll soon find an overview in our article on common investment coins compared. Where is the best place to sell a Krugerrand?

Provider Suitability for selling a Krugerrand
Specialised precious metals dealer Best suited: knows the product, buys back at transparent, current daily prices close to the gold price
Pawnshop Less suited: investment coins are usually a side business, larger price deductions likely
Jeweller Somewhat suited: expertise in investment coins is often lower than at specialised dealers
Bank Mostly unsuited: many banks no longer buy back investment gold at all
Private sale (e.g. classified ads) Theoretically the highest price possible, but without buyer protection and with fraud risk

Precisely because the Krugerrand is so widespread and well known, it's still worth comparing prices between several specialised providers when selling — the trading margin can vary from dealer to dealer.

Does a scratch or discolouration reduce the resale value?

A common worry before selling: do visible signs of wear affect the price? For an investment coin like the Krugerrand, what matters most is the fine gold content it contains, not a numismatic collector's value as with rare collector coins. Light scratches or tarnishing from the copper content of the alloy usually have no noticeable effect on the buy-back price, as long as the coin remains clearly identifiable as a Krugerrand.

For more significant damage — such as a bent, holed or heavily worn coin — dealers in the market handle this differently: while undamaged coins are usually bought back at the regular, gold-price-based rate as resalable stock, a visibly damaged coin may in individual cases only be valued at the pure melt value of the gold it contains. If you're unsure about the condition of your coin, it's worth a quick check with your buyer before selling.

Do I need ID to sell?

Since a single 1 oz Krugerrand, at the current gold price, is already well above the EUR 2,000 threshold, selling to a German dealer in practice almost always triggers the identification requirement under Section 1(10) in conjunction with Section 10 of the Anti-Money Laundering Act (GwG). This applies regardless of whether you want to be paid in cash or by bank transfer. Reputable dealers generally require this identification for buy-backs — also as protection against trading in stolen goods. Only for the smaller denominations (such as 1/10 oz) can the resale value, depending on the gold price, fall below this threshold. You can read more about the anonymity limits for buying and selling gold — including an international comparison — in our article Buying Gold Anonymously: Limits, Rules and Reporting Requirements.

Do I have to pay tax when selling my Krugerrand?

The same tax rules apply to the Krugerrand as to any other investment gold: if you hold the coin for longer than one year, you can keep the profit from the sale completely tax-free. If it's sold within that year, the profit is generally taxable, provided the applicable exemption limit is exceeded. We explain the exact rules, deadlines and worked examples in detail in our article Selling Gold and Taxes: Holding Period, Tax Office & Exemption Limits.

As with any investment gold, what matters for proving this to the tax office is the purchase date on your invoice or purchase receipt — so keep this safe for a Krugerrand too, for the entire holding period.

Summary

The Krugerrand is one of the most liquid investment coins there is — which is precisely why it can generally be sold quickly and without an elaborate individual assessment. What matters for the price you achieve is the precisely known fine gold content combined with the current daily gold price and the buyer's trading margin — not whether you own the standard size or a smaller denomination. If you know the current buy-back price before selling and, for larger holdings, keep the identification requirement and the one-year holding period in mind, you can sell with confidence and without unpleasant surprises.

At Geiger Edelmetalle, we show you the current buy-back price for your Krugerrand transparently in our online shop, even before you decide to sell — we're also happy to advise you personally on which sales route suits you best. View the current buy-back price for your Krugerrand now

Frequently asked questions

How much gold is in a Krugerrand?
The standard size (1 oz) contains exactly one troy ounce (31.1035 grams) of pure gold. Due to the copper alloy, the coin's total weight is just over 33 grams, since the Krugerrand is minted at 916.7 parts per thousand (22 karat).

Does my Krugerrand coin need to be assessed before selling?
No, unlike old gold or jewellery, standardised investment coins like the Krugerrand require no individual assessment of weight or fineness — the buy-back price results directly from the known fine gold content and the current daily gold price.

Where do I get the best price for my Krugerrand?
Generally at specialised precious metals dealers, who buy back close to the gold price. Pawnshops and jewellers often pay noticeably less for investment coins, since this is usually only a side business for them.

Do I have to pay tax on selling my Krugerrand?
This depends on the holding period: after one year, the profit is tax-free; before that, the standard exemption limit for private disposal transactions applies. You can find details in our article on selling gold and taxes.
