The Britannia gold coin was first introduced as a modern investment coin in 1987, making it one of the earliest European bullion coins. The editions minted until 2012 are made of 22-carat gold (916.7/1000) – a traditional gold alloy that was also used in historical circulation and trade coins. The fine gold content is always 1 troy ounce, supplemented by copper alloys, which give the coin its characteristic robustness and warm gold tone.
The reverse shows the iconic depiction of Britannia, designed by Philip Nathan, with a trident and shield – symbols of maritime power, protection, and sovereignty. This motif has been carefully varied over the years and is considered one of the most famous coin designs in Europe. The obverse features the respective portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, which has changed several times during her reign, making the coin a contemporary historical document.
