The gold coins bearing the portraits of the German emperors are among the historic gold coins in circulation. Depicted is King Ludwig II Otto Friedrich Wilhelm of Bavaria, who was known, amongst other things, for the construction of ‘Neuschwanstein Castle’, ‘Linderhof’ and ‘Herrenchiemsee’. Also known as the ‘Fairy-Tale King’, he reigned from 1864 to 1886 (10 June 1886) and died a few days later on 13 June 1886.
The obverse features the Imperial Eagle with the Hohenzollern shield, ‘Deutsches Reich’, the year and the face value.
From 1924 to 1938, the 10 and 20 Mark gold coins of the German Empire were also legal tender.
Today, these gold coins are sold as investment coins and are also very popular amongst collectors.
The 900/1,000 alloy ensures a robust investment coin, as the copper content is higher than in classic gold bullion coins.
